If you’ve been thinking about solar, get started now to take advantage of Federal Solar Incentives before they expire.

As part of our effort to encourage clean energy choices in our community, I recently interviewed leaders at Earthlight Solar and Energy Solutions in Ellington, CT. Here’s what I learned from our conversation.
Why does going solar seem so complicated?
With a growing market comes a wave of myths and misleading sales tactics. There are many companies to choose from, various payment options and solar technologies. The Earthlight team was very knowledgeable and transparent about the solar industry. There are a few misconceptions they hear often.
Myth 1: Solar Will Keep My Lights on During a Power Outage
Many people assume that once solar panels are on their roof, they’ll have power even when the rest of the neighborhood is dark. This is a common misconception. In reality, most grid-tied solar systems are designed to shut down automatically during an outage to prevent back-feeding electricity into the grid, which could be dangerous for utility workers. The only way to keep your lights on when the power goes out is to have a battery backup system installed alongside your solar panels.
Myth 2: Solar Panels Are “Free”
The idea of “free solar” is a powerful sales pitch, but it’s a myth. Solar power is a long-term investment. While it’s true that many financing options exist—including power purchase agreements (PPAs) and leases that may require little to no upfront cost—the system is ultimately paid for through your monthly payments and the savings you’ll see on your electricity bill over time. Be wary of any company that promotes solar as a completely free solution without explaining the financial commitment involved.
Choosing a Solar Company
By doing your homework and looking past the sales pitch, you can avoid common pitfalls and make an informed decision that will benefit your home for years to come.
Get THREE quotes. This is standard for most big purchases, but it’s invaluable with a solar project. Materials, financing, installation, and scheduling should meet all of your personal needs and situation. Choosing the right company is just as important as choosing the right system. Here are key things to look for:
Green light indicators of a reputable solar company…
1.) Clear and Transparent Process: A good company will start with a thorough assessment, such as a free shade report, to determine if your home is a good candidate for solar. They should guide you through every step, from system design to final energization, and handle the entire process in-house.
2.) Longevity and Reputation: Check how long the company has been in business and read their reviews. A company with a long history and positive customer feedback is more likely to be stable and reliable.
3.) Warranties and Post-Installation Support: Ask about product and workmanship warranties. A reputable installer stands by their work and offers ongoing support. This is especially important given the rise of “orphaned systems,” where companies go out of business and leave homeowners without support.
Red flags to watch for…
- High-Pressure Sales: If a company pressures you to sign a contract on the spot, walk away. A reputable company will give you time to review the proposal, understand the terms, and ask questions.
- Vague Financing Terms: Be skeptical of companies that push financing without clearly explaining the interest rates, loan terms, and total cost. Make sure you fully understand what you’re signing.
- Unrealistic Installation Timelines: While some companies can work quickly, promising an unusually fast installation might indicate they’re cutting corners or relying on third-party contractors who aren’t invested in the final result.
