This year, the Jonah Center will lead Macdonough Elementary School students and teachers on a canoe trip on the Coginchaug and Mattabesset Rivers, launching at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 5. Canoes, paddlers, and financial sponsors are needed! The group will paddle through the spectacular “floating meadows” and up the Mattabesset River to Cromwell, observing the plants, animals, and lush scenery of this 1000 acre tidal marshland. We will return to the starting point at 3:00 p.m. to join the Mayor’s ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the new Phil Salafia Canoe & Kayak Launch at 185 Johnson Street, adjacent to the City’s recycling center.
Financial sponsors, canoes, and volunteer paddlers are needed to make this event happen and to include as many students as possible. If you can paddle and/or transport a canoe on your vehicle, or if you can loan a canoe that someone else can transport and paddle, please call or text John Hall at 860-398-3771, or send a message from here.
Financial sponsorships to cover insurance costs ($30 per student) may be sent by check payable to the Jonah Center, P.O. Box 854, Middletown CT 06457, or by credit card using the DONATE button on the upper left side of this page. . (Write “School Paddle” in the message space that will be provided during the donation process.)
