Walk With Us On The Landfill Trail

This is a sneak “peak” of the view.
See the rest for yourself, join an upcoming walk with us!

– May afternoon at the retired landfill

Imagine yesterday’s trash as today’s treasure. At Middletown’s retired landfill, you can see stunning views of three rivers, a 1000-acre tidal marshland, the Arrigoni Bridge, and faraway hills. This quarter-mile path (rising 80 feet to the top) is next to the city’s transfer station and the Keating Building. It even has its own soundtrack…bird songs! This is a transformation in progress that’s worth seeing.

Join the Jonah Center for a short, invigorating walk! It’s about 10 minutes or less to get to the top where we can have a snack and take in the view together.

Background:

The Jonah Center has worked, off and on, with the City since 2006 to realize the vision of a wildlife and scenery viewing park on top of the landfill. With our encouragement and support, the City was awarded a $103,000 grant to build a gravel road to the top. This allowed a solar array to be installed, providing clean, renewable electricity for the Keating Building.

Various city officials have expressed enthusiasm for an elevated wildlife viewing platform that would serve as a destination, and a loop trail with some benches and interpretative signage. We’ll provide more details and history during the walk.

It’s time to continue the transformation. After 18 years of advocacy, we’ll be working toward making this vision become a reality – a recreational and educational resource for North End residents, a scenic walk for people who visit or work in the Keating Building, and another reason to visit Middletown.

Everyone is welcome to be a part of this movement to complete the trail.
