Our vision for the Midden Lookout Park is coming into view. This has been a core project of the Jonah Center, since 2006!

A recent drone photo by Matt Stauble shows the developing Midden Lookout Park in its summer glory. Follow along with this story by referring to the location letters A-I in the image. 

A is the main location, the Midden Cap, where you can enjoy views of the 1000-acre marshland known as the Floating Meadows, a rich habitat for fish and birds.

B marks the location of the canoe and kayak launch finished in 2013 where kayakers launch onto the Coginchaug River, visible at location C to reach the Mattabesset River and Floating Meadows, D.

E marks the entrance to the Midden Lookout Park, where we have an information kiosk, between F, the Keating Enterprise Park, and G, the Middletown Recycling Center.

H is the trail from the entrance to the top.  It’s a steep grade, so take your time. We plan a future bench along the way for resting, and eventually a more gradual trail along the right (north) slope.

I is the solar array installed in 2024. The Jonah Center began advocating for renewable energy–either methane capture or solar– on the landfill in 2007.  Through a Wesleyan study in 2008, it became clear that the methane was by that time too depleted.
