Over 250 Middletown Homes will Lower Energy Bills without Sacrificing Comfort – Is Yours Next?

By the end of this year, over 250 Middletown homes will complete a home energy assessment—most by this fall.

All Middletown residents can participate in HeatSmart Middletown.

Residents who have their home assessed save $70-$100 per year on their energy bills, and additional upgrades can lead to even more savings.

How are we reaching 250 homes in the year of America 250?  

Here’s something to celebrate! With help from Lisa Liesener, Middletown’s Recycling and Sustainability Coordinator, we connected with the Middletown Housing Authority. Executive Director Ben Bare has committed to completing energy assessments at Housing Authority homes in the Rockwood Acres, Sunset Ridge, and Santangelo Circle neighborhoods.  

Housing Authority operations leaders have started working directly with CMC Energy Services who have already serviced the first 26 homes.

The service includes a comprehensive assessment of each property’s HVAC, insulation, windows, and common/exterior lighting.

This summer, CMC will finish the next 180 assessments, possibly with even deeper measures.

Core upgrades are being provided at no out-of-pocket cost to the Housing Authority or the tenants.

To date, almost 50 residents have signed up for a Home Energy SolutionsSM assessment and service through our efforts like canvassing, landlord support, a message in the July tax bill, “Energy Bingo” at the Senior Center and more. With over 20,000 households in Middletown, there is still a huge opportunity to save people money and reduce local pollution.

Over the last ten years, local action has lagged. But as we witness impacts from climate change and experience rising energy prices, we are finally seeing a shift. As we celebrate America’s 250th year, embracing energy efficiency is a powerful way to protect our citizens’ health for the future. And when a polluting fossil fuel furnace fails, people can feel more confident choosing an electric Heat Pump that also cools their home in extreme heat.
