Wading Through Mugwort at the Midden

We are deep into our suppression efforts at the Midden. Volunteers are needed this week. Sign Up Here to Help (for early morning and evening work parties to beat the heat 6/16 – 6/18.)

Last week, a small group of volunteers laid out a strip of cardboard 100 feet long and about 10 feet wide. A few more hands this week can really help. This was a huge accomplishment in the heat!

We are creating a 365-foot ring around the top of the landfill to suppress a 14-foot wide band of mugwort, like a moat around the top edges. Yes, that’s a LOT of cardboard and a LOT OF AREA to cover. Once that cardboard foundation is laid out, it will be covered with 6 inches of woodchips. These layers will remain in place for as much as two years while we work on the center.

Thanks to all the volunteers who help with this work! We cannot do it without you!

In the coming days and weeks, if you walk this area, you’ll see other suppression tactics. Through mowing and an organic herbicide treatment, we aim to weaken the mugwort root system this summer to make way for native meadow plants. Foot traffic through the area will be limited for a few days after each treatment. (4-5 times throughout the summer) If you have questions about this, please contact Kristen Colombo for more information – kcolombo@thejonahcenter.org
